Old Kernel on New HW Views: 3253
     Wednesday, July 30 2008 @ 04:57 PM EDT
I'm trying to load Red Hat Enterprise desktop 3 update 9 (this is a 2.4.21 kernel) onto a new laptop. Of course the sata drive (which is the root file system) is not seen. (LILO sees the drive and boots the kernel which then panics when it can't find the root fs) The H/W uses an ICH8 controller. It should be compatible with the ICH7 but the pci id has changed. Is there a way to force the system to use the older driver?
