How do you get it?
Download, Store Purchase, LUG, or a Friend
Typically comes as a 'distribution'
- What is a distribution?
- Linux Kernel with core utilities and libraries - 10%
- X Window system and GUI - 30%
- Server side programs like web and email servers - 20%
- Client side programs and applications - 30%
- Installation programs and utilities - 10%
- The cost is actually for support, not the software
Notes:
The percentages are how much of a distribution are devoted to what kinds of applications. The point is that the Linux source and kernel make up about 2% of the dist. The rest of the software, like Apache, exist independently of Linux. In fact, they also run on other OS's like the BSD's and even Microsoft platforms. Open source is about choice.
